There are three responses to a piece of design—yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.

Fostering Collaboration.

Design accolades do more than recognize outstanding design work—they foster collaboration, elevate craftsmanship, and build team morale. Submitting to competitions challenges designers to reflect, refine, and push their creative boundaries. Furthermore, it’s a process that demands time, patience, and teamwork—and it’s always worth it.

Since my time as a student, I’ve seen the value of design competitions firsthand. Encouraged early on by my professors, I’ve come to view them as a space for growth, validation, and celebration. In short, graphic design competitions have helped me improve my craft, promote my work, and inspire others to do the same.

More importantly, recognition in design competitions is a meaningful way to honor the trust clients place in designers. It’s a shared achievement—one that belongs to the entire team.

Student Design Competitions.

I believe student design competitions are a powerful way to showcase student work, highlight course outcomes, and elevate the reputation of a design program. More importantly, they validate students’ efforts, build confidence, and foster a sense of pride and community.

While at Texas State University, I served as Chair of the Design Competition Committee, where I witnessed firsthand how recognition transformed students, boosting their passion and self-belief. Today, I continue that work at Baylor University as the lead and liaison for design competitions in the Department of Art & Art History, where I teach courses in Identity Design, Packaging, UI/UX, and Digital Imaging.

Design competitions remain one of my favorite aspects of teaching. Thus, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing students grow through the design process and their student career, while gaining recognition from respected creative leaders. In fact, in just a few years, my students have earned accolades from AIGA, the American Advertising Federation, Communication Arts, GDUSA, Graphis New Talent, LogoLounge, and the National Student Show and Conference.

Winning awards means it’s no longer your instructors, friends, or parents saying your work is good. It’s the professionals saying that your work is good.
